Let me be cheesy and start this rant with a quote. Here we go……. “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life,” wise words from Bill Cunningham . But what happens when you get invited to an event and the organizer chooses your armor for you in a form of your dress code ?
I know for one I have been invited to events with a dress code stipulated on the invite and I turned the invitation down. ….Yes, because of the dress code. What I wear is very important and so when I feel like I am coerced into wearing something I don’t like all in the named of being uniformed together with the other guests, I abort the mission.
Seriously I dislike dress codes . I don’t understand dress codes. I can never decipher any dress code. I don’t know which category most clothes fall under. Like, does a pink oversized suit fall under formal or street style ? Does a little black dress fall under black tie or cocktail? What is cocktail ? Is it the length of the dress, the fit, the fabric ? These are all the questions I ask myself all the time when I see a dress code in an invitation. It gives me anxiety just thinking about dress codes right now . I am invited to my a friend’s baby shower and the dress code is “burgundy and white “ and Lord knows I don’t know what that means. Sometimes I wish people can specific like “don’t wear pants” or “ wear heels only “ ….I don’t know man .
Recently SA Fashion Week hosted it’s #SS19 Luxury Collection Shows and the invite made it clear that we must wear
“NO COLOUR , Fashionably Formal and No jeans”………..The “no jeans” part was followed by a please . They really wanted people not to wear jeans but I’m sure most photographers ignored that. I wore colour not because I was being rebellious but because I didn’t know what “no colour “ means .
Here’s how the other guests interpreted the #SAFW #SS19 dress code .
No Colour?
No colour ?
No colour ?
No colour ?
No colour?
LOL, he even wore jeans ……they said no jeans …PLEASE
No colour?
Can we agree that no one understands these dress codes because as much as all these people are stylish, they didn’t follow the dress code, probably because they do not understand it.
