There’s no better thing in fashion than fashion activism. There’s no louder statement in fashion that a model walking down the runway dressed in an outfit that has a political message ,and that’s what South African designer Wanda Lephoto gave us yesterday at #safw. Wanda who designs ready to wear street inspired menswear sent one of his models in an ANC shirt. The short-sleeved button up shirt was completely made in ANC flag fabric. The styling of the entire look might be questionable but the statement was clear.
South Africa is currently in election season, with the General Elections taking place 8 May. The country is just a month away from practicing one of the most patriotic acts, which is voting . So for a young person like Wanda to remind young fashion lovers that it’s time to vote is a powerful statement to make. This is not the first time that Wanda makes a political statement on the runway. Last season he sent a model in a T-Shirt with ANC colors , then went on to caption it uMkhonto weSizwe which was the ANC military structure which assisted the liberation movement in fighting for liberation.
Wanda is not the first designer to go political on the runway. Rubicon celebrated the iconic Winnie Mandela last year which was fitting because she passed on just a few days before SAFW began. But locally, designers like David Tlale have never hidden which political parties they are affiliated with. Globally, designers like Dior, Ashish Gupta, Mara Hoffman, Public School and even Philipp Plein have showed solidarity to different initiatives through their clothes. So Wanda is on the same level of political consciousness as international designers . The rest of the #SS19 collection was nothing short of kasi street style .
The wool combo is a must have going into winter in 2 months. It looks a little bit heavy from the runway but I am sure men are strong enough to carry this wool in style. If women can walk in 8 inch heels, what’s a little bit of wool?
Animal print is also in season. Any form of animal print, so find the animal in you and you will find the print that will best suit you .
In your wardrobe also according to the Wanda Lephoto #SS19 collection, you should have green pants to brighten up your life. Have formal shorts, not for school but for cool.
The bucket hat is a classic street style accessory , without it your look might just be incomplete .
