Award winning American rapper and activist Meek Mill performed for the first time in South Africa last night at The Dome in Johannesburg . Mill was the International act at the Castle lite Unlocks festival which also had local starts like AKA, Cassper Nyovest, A-Reece and many more.
On stage Mill thanked South Africans for all the support they have shown him. “I would like to thank y’all for all the support you show me when I was in jail through #FreeMeekMill.” The rapper from the State of Philadelphia who is currently on probation was prisoned and released last year after the public took to the streets and social media calling for his release.
After his release from prison, Mill released an album titled “Championships” which he performed most of its songs in South Africa. The rapper who is also an advocate of the #BlackLivesMatter movement dedicated his performance to all his friends who died by the gun and rapper Nipsey Hussle who was recently brutally murdered.
Not all was political and deep during the performance . Mill took the opportunity to dedicate songs to South African women talking about how beautiful they are . His compliments were attested to by another American act, DJ Sway who was one of the hosts at the festival . “South African women are so beautiful. Listen ladies, if South African men do not treat you right, you must all come to America with me,” he joked .
Mill performed to a sold out venue and when fans asked him on social media if he will tour other African countries , he said yes but for now he is heading to Cape Town.
