With the world finishing off its fashion weeks of different seasons, South Africa’s prestigious and much celebrated fashion week, SA Fashion Week has announced the line-up for its Spring/Summer 2019 Luxury Collections. This instalment is probably one of the most anticipated fashion week collections because it will be celebrating not just South African talent but the country’s growing luxury industry.
SA Fashion Week SS19 Luxury Collection will take place in Sandton with the “single-minded commitment to promoting a world-class African design ethos and industry across the continent” . The 35th SAFW season will give a platform to 34 luxury brands and 50 designers who will exhibit at the SAFW Trade Show which will take place at the same time as the runway shows.
Day 1 of the shows will open with Woolworths Style By SA which includes collections by Thebe Magugu , Wanda Lephoto and Mmusomaxwell. These designers have cemented their footprints in the local fashion industry with Magugu being shortlisted as one of the 20 international designers up for the LMVH Prize 2019. He recently shared his journey which included showing his collection to the godmother of global fashion, Anna Wintour. Mmusomaxwell made the headlines in 2018 when Beyonce wore their collections during her visit to South Africa.
“The broad-based consumer exposure that this initiative gave to South African design will have a major and ongoing positive impact on the industry despite coming to an end this season,” says SAFW director Lucilla Booyzen about the Woolworths Style By SA .
Here at Hazelbird Post, we are always fascinated by young, fresh designers, and Day 3 will be an exciting day because it’ll showcase the MINI Scouting Menswear in association with GQ SA menswear collection. “This season reflects that vision with designers drawn from a myriad of backgrounds and each telling a unique story with their respective collections.” This year’s finalists are Richard Hoy, Reign, Denzel Vilakazi, Dorcus Madi , ZAZU By Zandile Makombe and BI PAREL.
DUT designers have always been consistent and we hope this year, they will bless the runway with more of their innocent creativity and hunger for the fashion stage. Their theme this season is “The Art Of Fashion”.
But, wait a minute …we are not done yet. Closing the shows will be the legendary local brand that gave us so many childhood memorie……. ladies and gentlemen, fashion lovers,……………… Loxion Kulca will be closing the #SAFW #SS19 season. The kasi brand is marking 20 years of existence. “Loxion/lock-shin/location” is a unique South Africanism to describe townships, ghettos, disadvantaged and under-developed areas and the brand’s DNA has been to capture this distinctive meaning of “home” and the urban African state of mind it represents when combined with the historic pride, identity and hard-won freedom conveyed by the idea of Kulca (culture).”
